Maren Loe Receives All-State Honorable Mention
November 10, 2011
Maren Loe was recognized as one of 18 finalists for the AAA All-State Volleyball Team at the Annual State Tournament Banquet Wednesday, November 9th. Twelve players were named to the AAA All-State team; Maren and five other players received honorable mention. The banquet is held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel near the Excel Center in St. Paul where the state tournament is held. At the banquet, the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association recognizes state tournament entrants, All-State players, Hall of Fame inductees, and, the Ms. Baden Volleyball Player of the Year — Leigh Pudwill of Centennial this year.
The entire varsity team was invited to join Maren, the coaches, and Maren's family at the banquet, and nearly everyone was able to attend.
A bit about the award: Coaches may identify five players for consideration of all-state honors at the beginning of the volleyball season and then may submit statistics for up to three players at the conclusion of the regular season. Statistics are used as a threshold for consideration by the selection committee. The Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association posts an information sheet with definitions and selection criteria. Since no player can achieve the statistical thresholds without the support of their teammates, all-state honors for a player are a significant achievement for the entire team, and the entire Apple Valley volleyball team can take pride in it.
Apple Valley Ends Season at Lakeville North
October 29, 2011
Apple Valley lost in straight sets to third seeded Lakeville North (18-25, 19-25, 15-25). Unlike the 2010 edition, the 2011 Lakeville North Panthers have lost a few matches when things did not go their way. Unfortunately for Eagles, the Panthers played well against them both times they met this season.
The two sides battled early in the first set. Natalee Johnson scored the first point of the match for Valley on a kill, but North scored the next four. Maren Loe contributed a kill and then served. North got the sideout, but committed a service error. North got the sideout plus one more. Natalee scored on a slide, Shanotta Bawek had an ace, and Colleen Moore had a kill as the Eagles climbed back to an 8-8 tie. Valley committed a service error, but Natalee got a kill to tie at 9. North then went on a 9-3 run. The Eagles called a timeout, and stopped a three-point run from getting worse on a team block by Alex Wangen and Shanotta. Valley got one more point on a kill by Natalee before North rattled off another three. The Eagles called their second timeout, and the server for North committed a service error. Valley trailed 15-21. North extended their lead by one, winning 25-18.
North scored the first point in the second set. On the next rally, North was caught out of system, and Maren Loe pushed the ball to the back-left corner for the point for the sideout. Aly Johnson got a kill on the next point, but Valley followed with a service error. North got only the one point as Aly got another kill on a slide. However, the Eagle committed another service error. This time North added another point before committing a service error. The Eagles committed a third service error, trailed 4-5, and coach Hagert called a tiomeout. The Panthers came back from the timeout, scoring three more points before Natalee Johnson ended the run with a kill. Natalee had a kill, Aly had two, and Maren three, and Maren and Aly combined on a block as the Eagles fought back to tie the set at 13-13. However, North went on another 9-3 run that ended on their third service error of the set. Colleen Moore added an ace as Valley closed to 19-22. North closed out the set with three consecutive points.
The Panthers began the set with a three-point run that ended with a service error. Maren Loe scored a kill, and Natalee Johnson added an ace as the Eagles tied it up at 3-3. North then went on a five-point run. The Eagles called timeout, and, when play resumed, Maren got a kill for the sideout. The Eagles trailed 7-11, when the Panthers went on a six point run. A timeout after three points did not succeed in ending the run, but North led 17-7 before committing a service error. Natalee caught the Panthers out of system and set the ball to the back line for a point. She followed with a tip-kill, and the score was 11-17. North got the sideout and added three more points. Natalee ended North's run with a power kill. Colleen Moore added and ace, and Natalee added a solo block before North got the sideout. Natalee got the first-serve sideout on one more kill. Apple Valley Sweeps Holy Angels First Round of Section Playoffs
October 27, 2011
The Eagles dispatched the Stars of the Academy of Holy Angels in less than an hour (25-14, 25-9, 25-8). Not surprisingly, Apple Valley's points came in bunches, and both Colleen Moore and Alex Wangen served more than one extended run of points.
The Eagles jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set on an ace by Natalee Johnson and one kill each by Maren Loe and Shanotta Bawek. Holy Angels served at 6-10, but Colleen Moore got a kill for a sideout and then stepped back to the service line. Maren and Natalee got kills on the next two points, and Colleen added an ace and Natalee another kill as the Eagles went on a 6 point run. The Stars got the ball back on a service error. The Stars got the sideout but no other points as Maren got a kill for the first-serve sideout. Alex Wangen had the serve. She served 12 times, and the Eagles scored 10 earned points. This run included two aces by Alex, seven points for Maren and Aly, and a kill for Shanotta Bawek on a power hit (not a dump). The Stars got three points before Colleen Moore put an end to it. The teams traded a couple of points before Natalee scored on a tip-kill to take a 21-7 lead. The Eagles finished out the set on a 4-2 run with a solo block by Maren, another tip-kill for Natalee, and a kill for Maren.
Holy Angels started the third set with a service error. Colleen Moore served the next 9 points, including two aces. Maren Loe and Natalee Johnson each had two kills during the stretch ending with a 9-1 lead. Valley got a first-serve sideout on a solo block by Natalee. Maren and Natalee each added two more kill as Valley built a 16-4 lead. The Stars served at 7-18 when Alex Wangen got a kill for the sideout, and Colleen rotated back to serve again. This time she served six times getting two more kills each from Alex and Natalee. The Stars dodged the first match point and served trailing 8-24. As the volley progressed, a high pass came to the back-right, and defensive specialist Garet Miliner hit the ball for the kill, the set, and match.
Maren Loe led all scorers with 14 kills and 19 points. Natalee Johnson was also in double digits with 10 kills and 12.5 points.
Apple Valley Tops #7 Bloomington Jefferson
October 18, 2011
The Eagles defeated the Jaguars in four sets (13-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-17). It was one of those Jekyll and Hyde nights. The Apple Valley team that lost the first set did not resemble the team that won the remaining three. Likewise for the Jaguars, the team that lost the final two sets did not resemble the team that won the first one.
The first set was painful for Eagle fans. Jefferson had a four point run and two five point runs building up a 15-4 lead. Aly Johnson ended the second run with a kill, and Colleen Moore ended the third run with a kill. The Jaguars had their largest lead at 20-7 when Natalee Johnson got a sideout kill. Colleen served a four point run, getting a couple of kills from Maren Loe. Jefferson finished with a 5-2 run to win 25-13.
The Eagles came to life in the second set. Aly Johnson, Natalee Johnson, and Maren Loe each had a kill and freshman Colleen Moore had three kill as the Eagles took a 7-5 lead. The lead changed hands five times, and the Eagles trailed 11-14 when the Eagles called time out. When play resumed, the Eagles got the sideout as Alex Wangen and Aly combined for a block. The next three earned points were all blocks with Maren Loe getting a solo block, Aly adding a solo block, and Shanotta Bawek joining Aly on a team block. This gave the Eagles a 16-15 lead over the Jaguars, and the Eagles lead 17-15 at the end of a four point run. The Jaguars got a sideout, but the Eagles got a first-serve sideout as Aly added a kill. She followed that with an ace, and the Eagle led by 3. The Jaguars drew to a tie at 20, but Maren got a kill for a one point advantage. However, the Jaguars repsonded with two more points for another lead. Valley tied on a Jefferson error, and Aly got a kill for the lead. The Jaguars took a time out, but Natalee closed out the set with two aces for a 25-22 win.
The third set started slowly for the Eagles. The Jaguars committed two service errors on their first two serves. Jefferson led 8-4, but all four of Valley's points were on Jefferson errors. Then the Eagles went on a 10-3 run that started on a kill by Natalee Johnson. Natalee had two more kills, and Maren Loe added one as Valley took a 14-11 lead. The Jaguars called time out. They succeeded in getting a sideout when played resumed, but they committed a service error to give the ball back to the Eagles. This started a series of first-serve sideouts &emdash; 10 of 11 servers failed to serve more than once. During that stretch Natalee had a kill. Alex Wangen had another. The ping-pong match ended as Maren Loe got a kill for a sideout, and Alex Wangen got the ball with a 21-17 lead. Alex served four times. The Eagles got a solo block from Maren as they took a 24-17 lead. The Jaguars scored five in a row, but the Eagles finally won the set on a Jefferson error 25-22.
Apple Valley had the momentum going into the fourth set, and they maintained it. Jefferson started making more errors as they crumbled psychologically. Aly Johnson had a solo block for Apple Valley's first earned point as the Eagles took a 5-2 lead. Colleen Moore and Natalee Johnson each had a kill, but the Jaguars clawed their way back to trail by only one at 7-8. Alex Wangen earned an assist on a kill by Aly as Valley took an 11-8 lead, but Valley committed a service error. Maren Loe got a kill for a sideout to prevent Jefferson from stealing the momentum. She added another kill to extend the lead to 13-9. Aly then served six in a row, notching two aces and getting kills from Natalee Johnson and Colleen Moore. The Eagles led 19-10. Although, Valley committed two more service errors down the stretch, Natalee added another kill, and Colleen recorded an ace. Maren Loe hit the final ball to the floor for the final kill for a 25-17 score, as Apple Valley upset seventh-ranked Jefferson.
The Eagles finish the regular season with a 15-11 overall record, and 5-4 record in the South Suburban Conference. Eastview, Jefferson, and Apple Valley tie for fourth place in the South Suburban Conference behind Lakeville South, Eagan, and Lakeville North. Section seeds to come.

Natalee got another kill, but Eagan again got a first-serve sideout. This time Eagan added three more points, taking a 13-6 lead. Natalee and Alex Wangen combined on a block to end the run, but a service error gave Eagan a 14-7 lead and match point. They only needed one try to end the set and match.
Although Apple Valley lost the match, they had a lot to feel good about. They went toe-to-toe with a highly ranked team that features an All State hitter. The defense played solidly. After holding four set points in set 2 and losing, they faced multiple set points in set 3 and kept their focus to win the set. It seemed that all the fans walking out of the gym felt that they had watched a very good match between two good teams.

Apple Valley Loses to Eastview in Five Sets
September 30, 2011
Apple Valley lost to cross-town rival Eastview 25-13, 25-19, 17-25, 21-25, 13-15. This looked like Apple Valley's best chance to beat Eastview in several years, and after winning the first two sets and coming out strong in the third it looked like they would beat the Lightning. That made the result that much more disappointing.
Eastview scored the first two points of the match but turned the ball over on a service error. The Eagle took their first lead at 3-2 when Aly Johnson and Shanotta Bawek combined on a block. Eastview got a sideout, but Apple Valley returned the favor. Maren Loe served the ball, scored on a back row hit, and followed up with an ace, but she also committed a service error. Shanotta dumped the ball for a point, Colleen Moore and Natalee Johnson each scored before another service error by Valley gave the ball back to Eastview with Valley leading 10-8. However, Valley got a first-serve sideout. Valley took control of the set as Natalee and Maren combined on two blocks, Natalee added a solo block, Alex Wangen and Maren each added kills. Valley got control of the serve at 16-11 when Maren led the Eagles on a seven point run. The run included kills by Aly Johnson, Colleen, and Shanotta, and Maren recorded an ace as Valley built a 22-11 lead. The set ended 25-13 for Valley on a kill by Natalee. Valley had 17 earned points in the set.
Eastview led in the early going in the second set. Maren Loe had two kills, Colleen Moore had a solo block, Alex Wangen had an ace, but Eastview led 11-8. Colleen Moore got a second solo block and put Shanotta on the service line where she delivered two consecutive aces, and Natalee followed with a kill to give Valley there first lead. However, the ball went to Eastview on a service error, and they ran off five straight points before returning the ball to Valley on their service error. Garet Miliner stepped onto the court and led the Eagles on a 7 point run! Garet had an ace, Natalee had 2 kills, and Maren added one as Valley took a 19-16 lead. The Eagle never relinquished the lead, though the Lightning got within 1 point at 18-19. Valley finished with a 6-1 run including a kill and an ace by Alex, a kill by Aly Johnson, and a team block by Aly and Shanotta.
The third set started out all Valley. Aly Johnson scored the first pointon a kill. Maren Loe scored the second. Maren scored an ace that Aly followed with another kill. Eastview got the ball on a service error, but Aly got a kill for a first-serve sideout and followed with an ace of her own. Eastview and Valley each got a sideout, and Shanotta scored the third ace as Valley looked to be on their way to a sweep with a 10-4 lead. However, Eastview scored 5 points in a row. Natalee stopped the blood loss with a kill and added another point on a tip-kill. However, a service error returned the ball to Eastview, and Valley got a first-serve sideouts and was leading 13-10. The Lightning got a first-serve sideout, scoring 5 consecutive points for a 15-13 lead. Aly got her fourth kill of the set, but Valley turned the ball over on the third service error of the set. Eastview ran off another 5 points to lead 20-14. Eastview finished the set on a 5-3 run to win 25-17. The Lightning seemed to have taken the momentum from the Eagles.
Set 4 started out with a pair of kills by Maren Loe and Aly Johnson. Maybe the Eagles could finish off the Lightning? The Lightning ran off nine consecutive points. The teams traded service errors bringing Garet Milioner to the service line with Valley trailing 7-14. Natalee Johnson got a kill, and Maren added two as the Eagles closed the gap to 11-14. Eastview hung onto their lead the rest of the way. Valley never got closer that 2 points, with Eastview winning 25-21.
The final set started out with Eastview building early leads of 4-0 and 10-4. Maren Loe had two kills, and Shanotta Bawek scored on a "2". Valley regained control on a tip kill by Shanotta, and Shanotta stepped back to the service line. Natalee Johnson scored on the next rally on a big hit that smacked the middle of the court. Shanotta scored two aces, the second hitting the tape and rolling over. Natalee tied the score at 10 with another resunding hit in the middle of the court. The teams traded sideouts. Natalee and Alex Wangen combining for a block. However, Taylor Schile and the Lightning added three points to lead 14-11 giving Eastview three match points. Valley held them off twice, climbing back to 13-14 on a team block by Aly and Maren. It was too little, too late as Eastview converted on their third match point, winning 15-13 in set five for a 3-2 victory.
The Eagles had four players in double digits. Maren Loe led the Eagle scoring with 13 kills, 2 aces, and 17.5 total points. Natalee Johnson had 11 kills and 13 points. The Eagles scored 4 more points than Eastview, but the Eagles committed 9 service errors to Eastviews's 4.
Apple Valley Finished in 8th place in Eagle Invite
September 24, 2011
The Apple Valley Eagles faced stiff competition in one of the most prestigious tournaments of the high school season: the Apple Valley Eagle Invitational. The field includes 16 of the very best teams in the state: including the top ranked teams in all three classes and most of the top ten ranked schools in 3A.
Apple Valley Over Alexandria (25-16, 25-10)
Apple Valley started out hte tournament strong with an impressive win over Alexandria. Alexandria served first, but Alex Wangen got a kill for the first-serve sideout. Maren Loe had two kills and Coleen Moore pushed a ball to the back line as Valley built a 8-3 lead. The teams traded a couple of serves when Shanotta got a kill for a sideout and then followed two points later with an ace for a 12-6 lead. Alexandria had a 6-1 run to get within one point of the Eagles. Alex got her second kill on a tipped ball and then went to the service line. Maren blocked a tipped ball, and Alex served an ace before Alexandria got the sideout. The teams traded sideouts. Natalee Johnson scored on a slide, but Alex got the sideout. Then Natalee smashed a B and followed with an ace. Colleen scored the next point solo blocking the ball back into the face of an Alexandria hitter. The Eagles finished on a 7-1 run.
Alex Wangen started the second set off serving for Apple Valley as the Eagles built a 6-0 lead. Natalee Johnson punished Alexandria for making an overpass on the first point. Natalee was part of the first five earned points for Apple Valley, combining on a block with Maren, getting a tip kill, smashing a B, and scoring on a slide. Alex scored on a tip kill as Apple Valley gained a seven point lead at 12-5. Alexandria narrowed the lead to six points with Maren Loe scoring on a roll shot and later on a hard cross-court kill. Natalee got another kill, and first-year player Isabelle Rieth took the ball to serve. Isabelle served out the set: eight serves, eight points. On the final point, Isabelle set Shanotta who got the kill to end the set and match.
Natalee Johnson led the scoring with 9 points on 7 kills. Maren Loe had 8 points and 6 kills.
Eagles Lose to Eventual Champs Blaine (16-25, 17-25)
We don't have records of either set. However, Blaine looked like a championship team. Senior Taylor Dorden (committed to Concorida St. Paul) and juniors Alex Brown and Sierra Trost anchored their back row. They also have the Dimke sisters. Senior Sydney Dimke is a left-handed, right-side hitter bound for the University of South Dakota bound, and sophomore Lydia is a setter who was named MVP of the 15 Open Division at USAV Nationals. The Bengals have only two seniors on their squad and many talented juniors and sophomores like middle Jessica Jorgenson and outside Katherine Hawkins. It is reasonable to expect to see Blaine at State this year and next.
Eagles Drop a Match to Marshall (23-25, 13-25)
The Eagles met Marshall in the morning of the second day of the Eagle Invitational in 2010 as well. Both matches were over in two sets, but last year the outcome was different. Apple Valley had their chance in the first set, letting errors trip them up. In the second set Marshall sophomore Kenzie Beekman tore it up from the outside. Hitting over, around, and through the Apple Valley block. Marshall only has two seniors on their squad and look to be a dominant force at 2A for the foreseeable future.
Eagles lose to Eagan (17-25, 17-25)
After soundly beating a ranked Centennial squad, Eagan lost tough 3-set matches to Bloomington Jefferson and Shakopee before meeting the Apple Valley Eagles. They were determined not to lose a third match. The Wildcats were led by sophomore stand-out Taylr McNeil. The arrival of McNeil from Lakeville North and the return of coach Kathy Gillen have helped elevate Eagan's team to a higher level than where they have been the last few years.
Blaine Defeats Bloomington Jefferson for Eagle Invite Title

Apple Valley Sweeps Bloomington Kennedy
September 23, 2011
Apple Valley swept Kennedy 25-18, 25-12, 25-15. Maren Loe was on fire hitting from the left side and back row with 21 kills, and the Apple Valley servers kept things rolling with 8 aces (3 for Natalee Johnson) as the Apple Valley Eagles dominated the Bloomington Kennedy Eagles. The fans were revved up with "varsity on a stick" night!
The first set started slowly for Apple Valley with Karin Bull and Heather Bachman putting up a strong block for Kennedy. Aly Johnson had a kill and Shanotta Bawek dumped a ball in the early going. The teams traded service errors and Kennedy had a three point run to take a 9-5 lead. Kennedy again led 10-7 when Valley blocked a ball that put Natalee Johnson on the service line that earned Apple Valley 8 more points. Maren and Aly combined on a block, Maren added two kills, and Natalee had two aces as our Eagles took a 16-10 lead. Colleen Moore and Aly each added a kill as Apple Valley built an 8 point lead at 21-13. Aly and Maren each had kills to snuff out Kennedy's attempts to rally and Apple Valley won 25-18.
Apple Valley continued to play with the intensity shown in the first set as Maren Loe started the set with a solo block, Natalee Johnson followed with her third ace, and Maren and Aly Johnson combined on a block for the first three points of the set. Kennedy had one short 4 point run, Maren had a kill, Valley had a service error, and the teams traded first-serve sideouts to give Kennedy a 7-5 lead. In this set, Aly Johnson led Valley on a six point run. Colleen Moore had a kill and combined on a block with Natalee. Kennedy had five sideouts the rest of the way, but Valley got first-serve sideouts each time. Shanotta Bawek had two aces and Alex Wangen had one ace as Valley extended their lead to 16-9. Another service error gave Kennedy the ball, but on the following rally Maren's luck continued as, back to the net, she passed the ball over, and hit the tape.
The ball rolled over and fell straight down for a point! Kennedy called a time out, but Aly responded with a kill. Kennedy got a sideout, but committed a service error. Aly added another kill before Kennedy got their last sideout. Valley finished off the set with two kills and an ace by Maren, winning 25-12.
The final set started with Valley earning six of their first seven points. The first five were kills by Maren Loe, and Shanotta Bawek added a kill for the sixth as Valley took a 7-5 lead. Kennedy led briefly at 10-9, but Maren had two kills and Aly Johnson had one. Kennedy got a sideout, but Valley got the first-serve sideout. In this set it was Alex Wangen serving the long streak, a six point run eanding with an 18-11 lead. Alex had an ace and Maren added two more kills to her total. The teams traded a few points, Valley committed another service error, and were leading 20-15. Natalee Johnson got the kill on the first-serve sideout. Shanotta served out the set with Valley getting earned points on the last three rallies from Collen Moore, Natalee, and Alex.
Maren Loe led the scoring with 21 kills, 1 ace, and 2 points on blocks. Aly Johnson had 6 kills, Colleen Moore had 5. Natalee Johnson had 3 aces, and Shanotta Bawek had 2.
Apple Valley Falls to #4 Ranked Lakeville South 0-3
September 20, 2011
The Eagles lost in straight sets (15-25, 17-25, 20-25) to a strong and seasoned Cougar squad. Eight of the ten players for South are seniors. In each set, the Eagles played evenly with the Cougars into the low teens, but the Cougars would get a run of five points. The Eagles on the other hand only managed to get a single run of three points and could never get any momentum built up.
Lakeville South scored the first point on a sideout, but Aly Johnson evened the score on the next rally. Lakeville got another first-serve sideout and scored an additional point. Shanotta Bawek took a long pass and slammed it home for the kill, and Maren Loe followed up with an ace to tie the score at 3. Colleen Moore and Natalee Johnson each contributed a kill for Valley on the way to another tie at 6-6. Lakeville South scored their sixth point on a rally that was repeated many times through the evening. Cougar outside hitter McKell Anderson hit the ball, which the Valley players blocked only to have the Cougars defense pop the ball back up, allowing Anderson to reload and (eventually) score. Natalee got kills on consecutive points to tie the score at 8, and South took a time out. South scored two points, and Maren answered with a big cross-court shot to draw within 1 point at 9-10. South got the sideout, and Megan Heimerman stepped to the line as the Cougars went on a 5 point run. Aly Johnson ended the run by smashing a B. Maren aded a kill as the Eagles closed to 12-15. Unfortunatey, a service error ended Valley's only run of three points for the evening. Aly and Natalee each added a kill, but South outscored Valley 9-2 to win 25-15. The set seemed much closer than the score indicated. Valley had 12 earned points, 10 of which were scored by the three captains.
Valley had slim leads in the second set at 6-5 and 10-9. Again, neither team scored more than two consecutive points. Aly, Colleen, and Maren each had a kill. South took a lead after a 3 point run. Maren got a kill to end the run, and Aly tipped a ball into South's near corner to tie, but another service error snuffed out the run. Each side had two service errors at this point. Maren got a kill for a first-serve sideout and a tie at 13, but Lakeville's Monica Turner served during a Cougar run of 5 points. Colleen got a kill to end the run, but Lakeville closed out the set with two more runs of 3 and 4 points respectively. Moore had four kills in the set.
Maren started the set for Apple Valley with an ace, Colleen added a kill, and Alex Wangen got on the board ith a kill as the Eagles took a 5-2 lead. The Cougars outscored the Eagles 8-2 with South's run chopped up by two kills by Maren. The next seven rallies were first-serve sideouts with Valley scoring a kill by Shanotta on an assist by Aly, a kill by Aly, and a kill by Maren. Valley trailed by 11-13, but Turner pounded a slide straight down that led to another 5 point run by South. Despite trailing by 7, the Eagles fired up! Maren had three kills, and Aly had a beautifull cross court shot that passed right in front of South's blockers. Unfortunately, Valley committed two more service errors down the stretch as well. The Eagles held off the Cougars at match point twice. First, Turner slammed the ball inside the 3 meter line, but was called for a carry. This was followed by a long and spirited point in which Natalee and Shanotta blocked Anderson at least twice, only to have Anderson or libero Allie Mosser recover the ball, giving the Eagles free balls to set up their offense in turn. The point ended when Natalee and Shanotta's block deflected to their left and fell near the middle of the court where no Cougar could reach it. However, the third time was the charm for South, and the match ended with Eagle libero Kelsey Harms diving and falling hard on the floor trying to keep the ball alive.
Maren Loe led the scoring with 13.5 points on 11 kills, 2 aces, and a block assist. Aly Johnson had 7 kills and a block assist, and Colleen Moore had 6 kills.

Eagles Sweep Irish in Conference Opener
September 13, 2011
The Eagles played team volleyball and committed few errors as they beat the Irish of Rosemount 25-20, 25-19, 25-19. The Irish feature veteran players at setter and outside hitter: Mikaela Sullivan and Jaclyn D'Amico, both seniors. Nine of their fourteen varsity players are seniors. However, they are also restocking their team adding two eighth graders to the squad: middle hitter Brittany McLean and right-side hitter Erin Slinde.
Rosemount jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead, but Valley fought back. Aly Johnson and Shanotta Bawek each served three point runs during a 9-4 run that gave the Eagles their first lead at 10-9. Maren Loe scored six of her seven kills for the set in the early going. With the score tied at 14, Rosemount committed a service error, Maren followed with an ace, Shanotta got a kill on the assist from Kelsey Harms, and Colleen Moore scored on a tip as the Eagles took a 19-14 lead. The five point difference held with Colleen adding a kill, Natalee Johnson scoring on a slide play, and Aly Johnson getting a solo block for the set winner 25-20.
In the second set, the two teams traded points in ones and twos. Natalee scored an ace and a kill, Aly scored on a tip and a slide, and Rachel Voss added an ace and the Eagles had a 10-9 advantage. Rosemount outside hitter Jaclyn D'Amico served an ace to end a 3-point run that gave the Irish a 13-11 lead. Valley went on a 11-3 run with Natalee getting a kill and team block with Shanotta Bawek and Maren adding two kills. Colleen Moore scored on a off-balance tip, but she followed that on the next point with a hard shot cross court. The run ended with Natalee making a smartplay, pushing the ball to a corner. The score was 22-16. Control of the ball went to Rosemount on a service error, but they responded in kind. Maren added a solo block and a kill to end the set.
In the third set, the Rosemount's Coach Vitek looked to her bench to see if they could turn things around for the Irish. However, in the early going the Irish continued to make unforced errors. Two of Valley's first five points were on service errors committed by the Irish. Of Valley's first nine points, only two were earned. In contrast, the Eagles committed no service errors for the entire set (as in the first set). Shanotta Bawek served for a 4 point run as Valley took an 8-5 advantage. D'Amico served a 4 point run for an Irish lead at 12-11. Her serve, and the Irish lead, ended with a service error. Maren Loe followed up with a solo block, two kills on hard hits cross court, and an ace as the Eagles built a 19-13 lead. The Irish tried to rally with a 5 point run of their own, but Colleen Moore got the kill that stopped them cold. Valley finished outscoring Rosemount 6-1, including a kill by Natalee when she smashed a B and an ace by Shanotta. The match ended on an Irish error.
Maren Loe led the scoring with 15 kills, two aces, and 2.5 points on block. Natalee Johnson was just shy of double digits with 7 kills, an ace and 1.5 points on blocks.
Eagles Finish Fourth at Aerie Challenge
September 11, 2011
The Aerie challenge began with a mystery and some drama. First, the mystery --- where were the officials? No officials had shown up by the 5pm start time for the first matches. As it turns out, the school had contracted with an agency to provide officials, but they had failed to schedule anyone for the tournament. After a few rounds of frantic calls, there were enough MSHSL certified officials to act as up refs. Second, the drama --- a Apple Valley football player had a concussion and was carried into the trainer's room. Emergency responders came to the high school soon after, strapped the player to a back board, and rolled him out the door on a gurney.
Apple Valley Over RCW (30-28, 25-12)
The 5pm matches started one hour late. Apple Valley played in one of the 6pm matches against Renville County West. Aly Johnson was out of the lineup with a sore back; so Alex Wangen moved to middle and Isabelle Rieth suited up for the varsity match to play on the right side. RCW jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, but committed a service error. Apple Valley struggled back into the match to tie it at 11 on an ace by Garet Miliner. RCW scored the following point, but it was followed by a kill by Maren and two consecutive aces by Natalee Johnson. RCW scored three to tie it at 14. After Valley took a 17-15 lead, both teams only scored one or two points at a time. The Eagles committed three service errors down the stretch which really hurt. One came with Valley leading 22-20. On the next two points Natalee killed a "B" and Maren made a heads up play pushing the ball to the corner. Valley could not convert on the two set points and RCW tied it up at 24. Maren scored kills for set points at 25-24, and 26-25, but RCW kept tying it up. RCW took a 27-26 advantage had another set point at 28-27. Shanotta Bawek got the ball with a tied score at 28. RCW tried to ice her with a time out, but Shanotta held serve with help from Natalee who scored to get another set point at 29-28, finishing the set at 30-28.
The second set was an entirely different affair. RCW scored the first point. Natalee answered by pushing a ball to the back line, but Valley followed with a service error. Valley got the side out when Maren killed the next ball. Alex Wangen and Shanotta followed with a team block, and Kelsey Harms dropped a short serve in for an ace. The Eagles continued to score for a twelve point run. Kelsey served three more aces and Maren added four kills. RCW scored a couple of points, but a 9 point difference at 5-14 was as close as they would come. Shanotta scored three aces on consecutive serves, and Natalee added three kills including a big hit on a B set. The Eagles gained match point on a team block by frosh RH/S Isabelle Rieth. On the final point Isabelle passed the ball over, and the RCW players watched fall as the Eagles wrapped it up.
Apple Valley Beat Virginia (25-14, 25-16)
The second match on Friday evening went much more quickly. Virginia had a 3-1 lead in the first set, Maren got a kill and Kelsey stepped up to serve. The Eagles had a 5 point run including an ace by Kelsey, a kill by Alex Wangen, and a kill down the line by Maren. Virginia got a sideout and another point, but Maren had another kill down the line that set the Eagles up for a 4 point run including another kill by Alex. The Eagles had a 5 point lead and slowly built it through the middle of the set. Natalee Johnson scored three kills in a burst on a B, a slide, and a tip. Isabelle Rieth had an assist and Alex added another kill down the stretch as the two teams traded points to close out the set with the Eagles winning 25-14.
The Eagles won the second set 25-16.
Eagles Lose Against Caledonia (14-25, 13-25)
I have no summary for set 1. Set 2 was all Caledonia. In fact, when the Eagles were trailing by a score of 7-18, four of the Eagles' point came from service errors by the Warriors. Play was dominated by middle hitter Emma Lange. The Eagles defense could not stop the athletic 6'2" middle. Couldn't block her, couldn't dig her. However, it would be unfair to say that the game was all about Lange. The Caledonia passing was right on target, giving their setter lots of options. Caledonia's other middle hitter, Maria Fruechte, also a junior, scored almost as much as Lange. Valley had only 6 earned points in the second set.
Eagles Drop Match to Stewartville (25-27, 21-25)
Stewartville has a great volleyball tradition, and this year they have another strong team, led by juniors Hannah and Paige Tapp (twin sisters that stand 6'2" and 6'1" respectively). The first set was one that Valley could have won. In the early going, three service errors kept Stewie in the game. The third service error resulted in a 8-7 lead for Valley. The two teams remained close with the lead changing hands a few times with Maren Loe and Aly Johnson alternating on the scoring for Apple Valley. With the score tied at 20, Stewie went on a 4-1 run. The Eagles staved off a Tiger set point, and Garet Miliner served as the Eagles held off the Tigers, climbing back into the game with Shanotta Bawek and Natalee Johnson combining on a block and Shanotta adding a kill. The Eagles took a lead at 25-24, but the Tigers scored three in a row to take the set 27-25.
The second set was like the first; service errors by the Eagles gave the Tigers four of their first five points. Again Maren and Aly paced the Eagles in the eraly going with three kills apiece. Shanotta and Aly connected on two nicely executed slides, and Maren added an ace. The Eagles were leading 8-5 despite the four service errors. Colleen Moore and Natalee combined for a block, and Maren added two kills, as the Eagles maintained a 3 point lead at 12-9. Stewartville scored six in a row to take a 3 point lead. Kills by Aly (on another slide), Shanotta, and Colleen even the scored at 16. The Tigers pulled away down the stretch winning 25-21.
Maren Loe led the scoring with 12 kills, an ace and a block assist. Aly Johnnson had 6 kills and a block assist.
AVHS Wins Home Opener over Stillwater 3-1
September 9, 2011
The Apple Valley Eagles defeated the Stillwater Ponies 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24. Apple Valley took the court and played their best set of team volleyball thus far. Six of their first seven points were earned; all of them scored by Aly Johnson and Maren Loe. The Eagles only led by one at 7-6 when Shanotta Bawek stepped to the line and delivered seven straight serves. During this run, Colleen Moore notched two kills, Alex Wangen and Natalee Johnson combined for a block, and Alex added a solo block too. Stillwater went on a run to close to 13-15, but it was all Eagles down the stretch as they outscored the Ponies 10-3. Maren had 3 kills, Colleen 2, Shanotta and Alex each added one. Maren led the scoring with 8 of Valley's 17 earned points.
In the second set was a bit closer than the first. In the early going, each team had five first serve-side outs in six opportunities. Valley had two short runs that got them to a 13-9 lead. Stillwater countered with a 9-4 run to take the lead briefly at 18-17. Natalee scored on a tip-kill to tie, and Valley gave up a point on a service error. Natalee and Kelsey Harms each served three point runs with Kelsey adding an ace, as the Eagles closed the set with a 7-2 run. Aly Johnson the Valley scorers with 4.5 points for the set.
Stillwater came out fast in the third set taking an 11-5 lead with Maren, Natalee, and Aly scoring. It was Valley's turn to score some pointsasColleen, Shanotta, and Alex each scored as the Eagles climbed back to a 14-14 tie. Aly scored on a slide, Natalee had a solo block, and Shanotta dumped a ball as the Eagles took a 20-18 lead over the Ponies. Stillwater tied it at 20 and the teams traded service errors (their second our fifth for the set). Valley lead 23-22, but Stillwater got the side out to tie and closed out the set 25-23. Aly led the scoring again with Maren and Nat close behind.
The final set close throughout and a bit dramatic at the end. The score was tied at ten points through the set, mostly in the early going. Aly Johnson scored 5.5 points of the Eagles' first nine earned points, scoring on a nice slide for the last one. The score was 14-14 (ninth time it was tied) when the Eagles' coaches called time out. It was effective as Valley surged to a 17-14 lead, but a service error ended the run. The Ponies scored two, but Natalee Johnson stopped them with a kill on a slide before they could tie the score again. Stillwater cut the lead to one at 19-20 when Valley again surged to a 23-19 lead with the consecutive points on blocks: a team block by Maren and Aly, a solo block by Maren, and a team block by Aly and Shanotta. A 23-19 lead looks pretty comfortable, but the Ponies scored four points in a row to tie the score a tenth time at 23. Maren added a kill for match point at 24-23, but the Ponies answered to tie the score at 24. Aly Johnson added another kill for a second match point, and this time the Eagles completed the set 26-24.
Maren Loe led the scoring with 16 kills and 4 points on blocks. Aly Johnson had 14 kills and 2.5 points on blocks. Shanotta Bawek, Colleen Moore, and Natalee Johnson added 8.5, 8, and 7.5 points respectively.
Apple Valley Notches First Win Over Chaska
September 1, 2011
The Eagles beat the Hawks 25-21, 16-25, 26-24, 25-18 to gain their first win of the season.
The Eagles started the match by falling behind 1-4. Chaska built their lead to four points at 12-8. Along the way the Eagles served eight times, all of them first-serve side-outs. Shanotta Bawek provide some spark in the early going, scoring two of Valley's first three earned points. Aly Johnson scored on a slide, and Maren Loe followed up with an ace, serving a run of four points and tying the match at 12. The Hawks ran their lead to three at 15-12 when the Eagles took over. Shanotta scored another kill and combined with Natalee Johnson on a block. Natalee put back an overpass, and Shanotta notched an ace as the Eagles built their own three point lead at 19-16. The Eagles closed out the set outscoring the Hawks 6-5 including a tip and a put back by Aly and a dump to win by Shanotta.
In the second set the teams were tied at 4-4 when nothing went the Eagles' way. Nine of twelve servers had first-serve side-outs. The only highlights were seeing Colleen Moore get on the scoreboard with an ace and a kill, and Natalee Johnson had a HUGE put back of an overpass made by Chaska. However, the score at that point was 13-21, and the Eagles followed with a service error.
Set three saw the lead trade hands several times. The Hawks led 4-2. The Eagles tied it at 6 when Moore scored on a hard shot down the line. Garet Miliner stepped to the service line trailing 7-8. Natalee and Alex Wangen scored on a block, and Garet served up an ace to take the lead. The Eagles got one more point for a 10-8 lead. The Hawks fought back for a tie at 15-15. Colleen Moore slammed home an overpass by the Hawks, and Natalee Johnson ran a slide as the Eagles again had a two point advantage at 18-16. The Hawks scored five in a row and, despite two time outs by the Eagles, took a 24-21 lead. The Eagles dug deep with a couple of great saves by Kelsey Harms and Rachel Voss. The Hawks tried to stall Valley's momentum with a time out at 24-23. On the next point Aly Johnson tied the score at 24 by pushing the ball deep to the corner, and Colleen hit line to take the lead. Valley closed it out to win 26-24.
The final set was a contrast to the first three in that neither side made many errors. Nineteen of Valley's 25 points were earned! Like the Wayzata match, seniors Aly Johnson and Maren Loe provided the punch. Aly had eight kills in the set and Maren added seven. The Hawks had a 4-1 lead; the Eagles tied it at 5-5. The Hawks led 8-5, and the Eagles tied it at 10-10 with Alex Wangen scoring two in a row and Maren adding a kill as well. The score was tied at 12 when Maren Loe served three, the Hawks had a first-serve side-out, Aly served a couple more points, and from that point the Eagles did not look back. Aly and Maren scored kills on five of the last seven Valley points, as the Eagles cruised to a 25-18 win.
Maren Loe led the scoring with 17 kills and an ace. Aly Johnson had 16 kills and shared on a block. Setter Shanotta Bawek had six kills, an ace, and a block.
Apple Valley Falls to #3 Wayzata in Four
August 30, 2011
Tonight Apple Valley fell to Wayzata 20-25, 13-25, 26-24, 20-25. The Trojans showed why they are currently ranked third in the state and are an early favorite to return to the state tournament again. Wayzata defenders Lauren Houg and Holly Beckman played exceptional defense and setter Julia Doyle spread the ball around for a balanced offensive attack.Apple Valley for its part struggled at times in serve-receive, allowing Wayzata to go on a couple of long runs late in the first set and early in the second.
The match started out with Wayzata scoring the first two points, one on a second-ball hit by Julia Doyle. Alex Wangen got the Eagles on the board on the next point. the two teams trading points; eight of the first eleven servers served once (i.e. first serve side out). Wayzata did not help themselves with a couple of service errors. The Eagles trailed 6-9 when Shanotta Bawek served five straight, including a couple of kills for first-year Colleen Moore, to give Apple Valley the lead at 11-9. Then Holly Beckman stepped up and served five for Wayzata, ending her run with a service error. Garet Miliner followed that with an ace. That was followed by an eight point run by Wayzata, served up by Lauren Houg, and the Trojans led 22-13. The Eagles tried to make a run at the end, getting three point runs from Kelsey Harms and Maren Loe, but it was not enough. Wayzata won 25-20.
The second set was a nightmare for Apple Valley. Wayzata's Houg again ran up a long string of points for Wayzata, building a 7-0 lead. Maren Loe got a kill to end the run, but Apple Valley followed with a side out. Doyle then served the next four points for an 11-1 lead. Aly Johnson ended the run with a kill. Shanotta Bawek added a tip and block, Maren Loe had two more kills and a block as the Eagles closed the gap to 10-16. Wayzata outscored Valley down the stretch 9-3 for a convincing 25-13 win.
The third set started out all Apple Valley with Natalee Johnson serving five points. The Eagles jumped out to a 7-1 lead, and then 10-3. Wayzata closed to 12-14, but Valley outscored Wayzata 9-6. It looked like the set was over when Valley led 23-18; however, Wayzata scored six straight and had set and match point when the Eagles took it back and closed it out, 26-24. The rookies Moore and Wangen each had a block and two kills in the set.
Wayzata took a 4-2 lead to start the fourth set. Then Maren Loe scored kills on the next six points to take an 8-4 lead. Wayzata followed that by outscoring Valley 17-5 (five first serve side outs for Valley). Down 13-21, Aly Johnson ended the Wayzata run with a kill, and the Eagles tried to stage a comeback. They closed the gap to three points at 20-23, but then Wayzata shut the door, 25-20. Aly Johnson had 5 kills in the set (three on slide plays). Maren Loe had nine kills and a block in the set and finished with 16 kills and 19 points for the match.
Preview: Apple Valley at #3 Wayzata
August 29, 2011
Apple Valley travels to Wayzata High School tomorrow evening. This is the first match for both squads. Wayzata features Julia Doyle, a 6'2" senior setter; all-state and all-metro in 2010, she will be the biggest player on the court and is a threat to score as well as a formidable blocker. Last year Wayzata's offensive punch was provided by middle hitter Toni Okuyemi who was named all-state honorable mention, but this year she will be sitting out the first half of the season with an injury. The team feaures seven seniors, five juniors, and two underclassmen. The back row is anchored by senior Holly Beckman and junior Lauren Houg. Look for Sara Watne to step up at middle hitter. See the recent article in the StarTribune
Play began last Thursday for some teams. Bloomington Jefferson (#1) swept Stillwater, Lakeville South (#5) swept Northfield on Friday and Rochester Century on Saturday. Prior Lake swept Chaska (our opponent on Thursday night).
Latest coaches' poll is out. There were 15 voters this time (only six in the first poll). Bloomington Jefferson tops the poll and got 10 first place votes. Lakeville North is #2 with 5 first place votes. Lakeville South is #5. Eagan, Apple Valley, and Prior Lake were the only other South Suburban teams getting votes.
