In the beginning ...
The following segment was written in 1996 by Walt Weaver for the 20th Anniversary Edition of the "Pipeline" and reprinted in the 30th Anniversary Edition.
When I was hired in 1976 as the head volleyball coach, I had to meet with the new athletic director, Gary Embretson, to plan our program. Since the gymnasium would not be complete until the winter of 1976, we needed to find a practice site for our team. Mr. Embretson beamed as we approached the issue, "How about this," he said, " school gets out at 2:25 - the cars will be out of the parking lot by 2:45 p.m. Could you set up nets in the parking lot and practice there?" I waited for a telling smile to indicate he was joking, but none appeared. Horrified, I realized he was serious. The look on my face, however, must have told him a good deal, because the next thing he said was, "Realize I know almost nothing about volleyball, but I'm willing to learn. Tell me what you need to be the best and I'll go to work." Well, the long and the short of it was, he did, and so did we. A year later we were conference champions and two years later in the state tournament. So far we still have never used the parking lot for practice, but every once in a while our new principle asks if that could work.
